Avnø Højskole is the educational aspect of Avnø Oasis.
A 'højskole' is a residential learning center for adults, where teachers and students live and learn together – in the classroom as well as outside.
Besides the facilitators, all the community members and volunteers contribute a lot behind the scenes.

All depending on the course you choose, you will experience a mix of informal learning methods, presentations, self study and group work.
An important part of the informal learning is about developing lifeskills. Active participation in the community, which also includes 1-2 hours of practical tasks every day, is therefore important
We love to see people, plants and projects grow.
We would like to contribute to create a more sustainable world. We are worried about the state of the world. For centuries, we have improved life by treating symptoms and borrowing from future generations. Through co-creation, we believe we can speed up the regeneration needed to create healthy, fulfilling lives for ourselves and future generations.
Community ‘Walking by the Earth’, Serbia
Avnø Oasis may be set in an old military complex from the 60’es, but the heart of the place is its warm open community, deeply rooted in …
sociocratic values, macrobiotic food, and care for the earth.
During the collective climate leadership course, participants from 13 different countries came together to explore how we can lead and collaborate better in the face of climate crisis. Through shared facilitation, and hands-on practice, we didn’t just learn – we co-created. The experience showed us that true leadership is collective, grounded in trust, diversity, and connection.
Tomojo, Community Educ.
Over the past 3 months I’ve learned so much that it truely changed my life …
As the first group of students, we even designed our own ecovillage – ours was in the country side. It turned out beautifully and i felt so lucky to be part of such an amazing team. I want to leave something good for the future, so I’ll start by doing what I can.
Hiro, Cooking for Health and Happiness
Through cooking at Avnø I realized taht food is so much more than nourishment …
It’s a way to connect with nature, with others and with myself. Using familiar ingredients like miso, ume and kombu in a Danish setting made me feel both at home and inspired, reminding me that our daily meals can be a quiet powerful form of cultural exchange.
Kana, Community Educ.
These 100 days in Denmark, mostly spent at Avnø, have been treasures, I carry for life. I feel like I have discovered a new level of happiness …
One that comes from living simply and being more honest with myself. I’ve realized how precious it is to taste a meal, walk in nature, create something by hand, and spend time with loved ones. This experience didn’t just give me memories – it shifted the foundation of my life. I’m grateful for every encounter and every quiet meaningful moment.
Olha, educator & community facilitator
My passion for sustainability brought me here. Permaculture isn’t just about the garden …
It is about taking care of the earth, of the people and sharing resources fairly. It’s a lifestyle of respect and balance. We live together like a big family – sharing meals, singing in the morning, working in the garden or kitchen, and listening to each other in our weekly sharing circles. That’s how we build trust and true connection.
English is the common language here, connecting people from many cultures and generations, from toddlers to elders.
We want the wider community to know they are welcome. Come for lunches, for a documentary night, or just to talk about sustainability – our doors are open.
Kiki, Reconnection Gives Direction
At Avnø I encountered the unique Danish tradition of Højskole – an education not driven by grades or exams, …
but by shared living, personal growth, and a deeper connection to the world. It’s a place where learning becomes a way of life, rooted in wellbeing, sustainability and community.
Maria, Canada
At Avnø Oasis, I discovered how to cook meals following the rhythm of the seasons and the body…
For two weeks I returned to simplicity – shared meals, creative spaces, and conscious choices. It’s a golden learning opportunity!
